How do bloggers make money blogging?

Well, that's one of those questions I asked myself when before I started blogging and even when I first started doing it.

I was once a new blogger. I was once the guy who took a risk at diving into the world of blogging with the thought of sharing my personal finance experiences and knowledge and the hope of earning money in the future.

I didn't know that I would be making money so early in my blogging journey. I made my first blog money on my 3rd month of blogging. Yes, that early.

A little over a year now, I have made over $40,000 working on my blog part-time. When I say part-time, I mean I only put at most 15 hours every month blogging. Still, I make more than $7,000 a month with such a small amount of time spent on blogging.

If you ever wonder how to make money blogging, you've come to the right place.

So, let's dig in and find out the answers.

1. Ad Networks

For me, ad networks are the best ways to go when you are starting as a blogger. As a matter of fact, a lot of top money making blogs make a decent pay from ad networks.

Some of the popular ad networks are Google Adsense, Media.net, and AdThrive. I like all of them because you can play ads of any size just about anywhere in your blog.

There is not a lot of the ins and outs when it comes to ad networks.

Once you set the ads up, then, you are good to go. You don't have to constantly check them unlike if you are promoting some affiliates.

Are ad networks pay in the same way? The answer is no.

Many of ad networks, if not all, pay a certain amount per click or amount per thousand impressions or in some other ways. Always remember that the devil is in the details.

The ones I listed below offer various products you may find suitable for your niche. These ad networks are:

2. Sponsored posts

As your blog grows, you will encounter business representatives wanting to promote their businesses on your blog. Many of these promotions are in the form of blog posts.

The payment you received from these posts can range from $50 to thousands of dollars, all depends on your blog traffic, engagement, client requirement, and other factors.

What I do recommend is only work on sponsored posts or products that you believe will be helpful for your readers. Don't just entertain sponsored posts just because of money.

So, why is it important to weed through the potential sponsored posts? Here is the reason.

I've had so many offers in the past but declined a lot of them because the products didn't seem to fit my overall blog theme. Money is good so is retention of avid readers.

You want to keep your readers entertained and keep coming back. To do this, you need to provide them valuable and high-quality posts.

Not all of the sponsored posts are of quality. So, you need to ensure that you only work with high-quality sponsored posts.

The same thought goes with product affiliates, that is, only recommend products that you would use as well.

You will come across with tons of products out there with such high commissions, but you have to choose the ones that you are willing to vouch for to your readers.

So, the question remains, that is, how do you really get paid from product affiliates? Here's the answer to it.

For example, I get paid a set fee when someone signs up for a blog. I don't just recommend Bluehost, my affiliate product, just because of the commission. I support it because I believe in it. I have been using it for over a year now, and I still love it.

You will come across with a ton of product affiliates as you grow your blog. You will try new things, like some of them, and hate some of them.

The secret to how bloggers make money blogging is promoting high-quality products that you won't hesitate to try and share even with your loved ones.

4. Your products/services

Blogs are not meant to sell other businesses' products and services. You can definitely sell yours. Period.

Some of my friend bloggers created their websites because they want to market their products and services. It's a smart idea if you ask me.

If you allow non-competing business to do sponsored posts in your blog aside from running your own business on the same blog, you could make money. Add on top of that are the ad networks. Then, you may be looking at even higher passive income.

That is also one of the secrets on how bloggers make money blogging.

Just think about big business. They have their own websites selling their own products, but they also run ads from third-party partners and make money doing that. This is also how some of the top money making blogs earn more money.

Whether it is a book or a tutorial or something else, you can use your blog to sell your products and services.

Currently, I sell Budget Printables. It's the exact budgeting template that my wife and I use to get out of the $40K we had and saved at least $70K in just 2.5 years.

5. Direct ad placements

Some ad networks have strict requirements, and you may not easily get approved to be part of their ad networks.

Does this mean that you have to give up right away? No.

If this happens or if you want to add other sources of income, you could consider direct ad placements.

You can directly get in touch with companies and tell them you are selling ad spaces. You can also put a note or a blank ad space with a sign “Ad space available.”

This way, companies know you have ad spaces available.

One of the keys to how bloggers make money blogging is through having diversified sources of passive income.

6. Out-of-blog engagements

When you become a popular blogger or an expert on your field, you may or will be invited to attend, host, speak, and anything in between on parties and gatherings.

You will get paid a fee plus some perks. As a fact, some of the sources of income for top money making blogs I am familiar of generate more revenues from out-of-blog engagements than the income from their blogs.

While I am not at that point yet, I have read and seen big bloggers that have gone to these engagements and have earned a substantial amount of money.

For example, if you are a fashion bloggers, you may get invited to fashion shows. You may get some bag of goodies, some cash, etc.

7. Giveaways and Reviews

If you have read a ton of blogs, one of the things that are similar among them is that they have giveaways or even reviews.

You know what, they make money out of them. Did you know that?

Yes, companies would come to bloggers to do promotions (i.e. giveaways) and to make them do their products' reviews for a set fee.

I've gotten so many offers for giveaways and reviews. While I highly appreciate companies sending me those offers, I only entertain and publish the ones I believe my audience will like and will benefit.

Getting paid by companies to do giveaways and reviews don't come right away. You need to establish your blog in the industry or niche it is in. But let me tell you something, that is, once your blog authority is there, companies will come flocking at your door for offers here and there.

My Personal Experience On Blogging

I didn't even expect to make as much as I have done this past couple of months. Truly, blogging has allowed my family to earn money on the side and save such money for our retirement, our daughter's college plans, pay for everyday expenses, etc.

I can say that I am one of those bloggers who make money blogging.

Blogging is such a good source of income for my family. Having said that, blogging can be difficult and is not for everyone. It doesn't mean though that you should give up right away without trying it first.

If you are like me who did everything to stand up a blog, it is necessary that you spend a ton of time doing your research on how to blog, how to create a blog, how to position ads, where to get ads, and so many things.

When your blog is up and running, your work isn't done yet.

If you want to monetize it, you also need to research and spend a lot of time figuring out the different sources of income for your blog. What I can tell you is that finding those sources can be exhausting and confusing.

Just the other day, one of my blog's avid readers started his blog and asked me how I make money through blogging. I provided him my two cents and the links to some blogs of mine that feature the different avenues I use to monetize my blog.
